Im sure I am not the first, nor will I be the last, person to question the source or origin of the word "blog" and Im sure I will not be bringing anything new and unique except sharing my research experiences.
One of my favourite sites for definitions is www.urbandictionary.com. It gives you such a funny way of explaining it and also an idea of how the actual term is conceptualised. I think individuals enter their own explanations and then people vote for which definition they prefer.
Obviously when I searched for "blog", I got multiple random results. Some of my favourites are "A recent and disturbing trend on the internet", "a place where people bitch about their daily activities which nobody is interested in" and "A meandering, blatantly uninteresting online diary that gives the author the illusion that people are interested in their stupid, pathetic life".
